Fast Charging: Pros and Cons

Fast charging is pretty much standard now. Although there is no single standard for it, fast charging is everywhere.

With all the hype and rage to make it faster and faster, I feel it’s high time to talk a bit more about what’s good and what’s bad about it.

  So, let’s dive into it.

Fast Charging Pros

Fast charging actually improves the usage of portable devices. Not that we’re not using them enough, but some (or many) users have to limit their usage not to get stuck with a dead battery forever. Fast charging actually makes the smartphone useable again in about 10-20 minutes.

Fast charging allows more extensive use of high-capacity batteries. With traditional charging, well, with any type of charging, the higher the battery capacity, the longer it takes to charge.

Fast chargers, in most cases, have enhanced safety features built-in, meant to prevent circuits and overheating, etc.

Fast Charging Cons

Fast charging actually kills off your battery faster. The Li-ion battery does have limited charging cycles. With fast charging, you use your device more, and you charge it more frequently. This leads to your battery dying out sooner.

Fast charging has an increased risk of overheating and corresponding hazards. Despite all the additional safety mechanisms introduced, this is still an issue. I’m sure I don’t want to even imagine what it would be like without those. Because fast charging makes the process intense, battery heating, which is a natural process, intensifies. This is bad for your battery and for your device.

Fast charging technology is not standardized. With traditional charging, the only limitation is the physical compatibility of the port and the plug. But with fast charging, several existing standards are not compatible with each other. Worse, you can’t differentiate between those at a single glance because the outsides look identical frequently.

Wrap Up

Fast charging, just like everything else in life, has its upsides and downsides. But so do the other charging methods we had an overview about before. With many smartphones coming with a fast-charging power adapter in the box, it looks like we’re not on the fence about this anymore.
